Cymbidium parents we use with names from M to P

This page presents a summary of our cymbidium and other outdoor growing breeding plants with names starting from M through P. These are used for breeding and display only and are generally not for sale. Photographs of many of the plants are included with three image sizes, a thumbnail about 80 x 60 pixels in size which is automatically displayed with the plant description (if image display is enabled), and links to a midsized image about 320 x 240 pixels in size and a 640 x 480 full sized image. Click on the thumbnail to see the full sized image or click on the plant name to see the midsized image if a midsized image is linked. All images are jpeg compressed and the image size in kbytes is included for each image so you can estimate the time required to download an image.

We try to include the important characteristics of each plant and what we expect it to produce as a parent. Plant size is indicated by Lar, Med, or Sm for large, medium or small, type of plant is indicated by Std, Nov or Min for standard, novelty or miniature cymbidium, bloom season is the primary month of bloom in coastal southern California and ploidy is shown as 2N, 3N, 4N or 6N, or with ? if uncertain. Novelty plants have a miniature parent in the background, and the miniature parent and generation is indicated by P, E, D, C, S, M, O for pumilum (floribundum), ensifolium, devonianum, canaliculatum, sinense (hoosai), madidum or other. The number after the letter indicates first, second, etc. generation for the miniature species in the background.

Cym. madidum is a species which puts out many long pendant spikes with up to 30 clear green 1 inch flowers on a large plant. The hybrids are usually very free blooming with lots of flowers and make specimen plants readily. The color usually follows the other parent. Min, Lar, Apr, 2N 73k

Cym. Mariner 'Lady Rose' is a free blooming dark pink with darker veins with 12 round 4 inch flowers on a 2.5 foot spike. Last year, the mother plant had more than 12 spikes in a 2 gallon pot. We are using this to breed well formed free blooming pinks. Std, Med, Mar, 4N 20k, 64k

Cym. Mariner 'Solana Hills' is a free blooming white with 12 round 4 inch flowers on a 2.5 foot spike. We are using this to breed well formed free blooming pinks. Std, Med, Mar, 4N 13k, 42k

Cym. Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' is a famous diploid breeder. It is very free flowering with up to 6 spikes in a gallon pot and more than 20 greenish brown flowers with dark lips on the 3.5 foot long spike. The dark lip and free flowering characteristic are dominant in the offspring. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 20k, 60k

Cym. Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' 4N is a colchicine converted tetraploid version of the famous diploid breeder. It is free flowering with up to 14 greenish brown flowers with dark lips on the 3 foot long spike. The dark lip and free flowering characteristic are dominant in the offspring. Cym. Mighty Sunset 'King Midas' is a bright orange yellow 4 inch flower on a free blooming plant. It usually will have 15 to 20 flowers on a 3 foot spike and up to 6 spikes in a gallon pot. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 19k, 55k

Cym. Miki Mouse 'Envy' S/CSA is a 5.5 inch very round, full light green with a big spotted lip and very heavy substance. We hope this can give better form to the greens. Std, Lar, Feb, 4N 21k, 63k

Cym. Mimi 'Mary Bea' AM/AOS B/CSA is a red miniature breeder which has been used in many hybrids. It often seems to breed as a tetraploid and produces free blooming red novelties with bold dark banded lips. Min, Sm, Mar, 2N?, P1

Cym. Mustang Ridge 'Erika' is a rusty red relatively open formed 4 inch flower on 3 foot long strong upright spikes, often two to a bulb and usually blooming in mid December. We are using this for breeding red Christmas pot plants. Std, Med, Dec, 4N

Cym. Negrito 'Vintner's Choice' is a 4 inch open formed dark wine red flower on a 4 foot long spike. This has been used for some dark red breeding, and we like it for its clarity of color. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 72k

Cym. November Woods 'Rum Red' is a 3 inch open formed prolific reddish brown flower which blooms around Christmas. In 1998, it had about 20 3.5 foot spikes and about 400 flowers in a 14 inch pot. We are using this for dark colored pot plants for the Christmas season. Std, Med, Mar, 4N?

Cym. Olymilum 'White Elf' 4N is an ivory white free blooming miniature which is being used quite a bit for white and pink novelty breeding. We are using this with pure color white standards to create charming white novelty flowers. It can have December flowering offspring as well. Min, Sm, Feb, 4N, P1 18k, 53k

Cym. Panalatinga 'Midnight' is a very dark red pendant miniature which has produced a few nice dark novelty crosses. We use this with other red pendant plants to create dark red pendant flowering plants. Min, Sm, Mar, 3N, D1

Cym. Patricia Lee 'Magnificent' is a free blooming 4 inch open formed light yellow flower on an upright long spike. We have used this for yellow pot plant breeding. Std, Med, Jan, 2N

Cym. Peetie 'Golden Harvest' is a bright golden yellow 4 inch fragrant flower. We have used this for yellow breeding, and with a few other fragrant standards to breed fragrance into modern cymbidiums. Std, Med, Feb, 2N

Cym. Peter Pan 'L5' B/CSA is one of the best of the selfing of Peter Pan 'Greensleeves' 4N. It produces longer spikes with more flowers and a deeper green color and a darker red lip. This is the backbone of our primary early breeding program. Min, Sm, Sept, 4N, E1 12k, 35k

Cym. Peter Pan 'Greensleeves' 4N is a fragrant early flowering green with a bright red lip and upright spikes. It has been used for many crosses and is the most important early novelty parents. Min, Sm, Aug, 4N, E1 18k, 60k

Cym. Pfeiffer Falls (Jean Brummitt x Tethys) is a medium green with 12 to 14 open formed 3 inch flowers on an pendant spike with a dark burgundy lip, and is covered with burgundy spots on the sepals and petals. We are using this plant with other spotted or pendant parents to develop more spotted pendant flowers. Nov, Sm, Mar, 2N, D2

Cym. Phreaque 'Gotcha' is one of the better labelloid sepal peloric flowers from the cross. We are using this to breed more of this type for the amateur market who likes the unusual and exotic. We believe about 50% of the offspring will exhibit this characteristic. Std, Med, Mar, 4N

Cym. Pinata 'Erika' is a very nicely spotted light pink flower with a dark velvet lip on a long spike. This is a part of our spotted cymbidium breeding program. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 23k, 66k

Cym. Pinata 'Fiesta' is a very nicely spotted reddish green flower with a dark velvet lip. This is the parent of our spotted strain of Cym. Samurai Hee-Haw, and is a part of our spotted cymbidium breeding program. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 21k, 64k

Cym. Pinata 'Jungle Cat' AD/CSA is a very nicely spotted dark pink flower with a dark lip on a long spike. This is also a part of our spotted cymbidium breeding program. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 25k, 75k

Cym. Pinata 'San Bar Spots' AD/CSA is a very nicely spotted medium pink flower with a dark lip on a medium spike. This plant is also a part of our spotted cymbidium breeding program. Std, Med, Mar, 2N 24k, 75k

Cym. Pink Ice 'Americana' S/CSA is a 4.5 inch round clear pink flower blooming in March with 14 flowers on a medium length spike. We are using this for midseason pink breeding. Std, Med, Mar, 4N

Cym. Pink Ice 'Sparkling Burgundy' AM/AOS B/CSA is a 5 inch blush pink well formed flower with slightly pointed segments and some darker veins. This can have more than 15 flowers on a 5 foot spike. Std, Lar, Mar, 4N

Cym. Pink Ice 'Streaker' is a 4.5 inch blush pink well formed flower with darker pink heavily brushed over the petal and sepal tips and the petal midribs. This can have more than 12 flowers on a 4 foot spike. Std, Lar, Mar, 4N 19k, 57k

Cym. Pink Passion 'Cloud Nine' HCC/AOS B/CSA is a clear white 4.5 inch round flower with a darker banded lip. This plant can have up to 14 stain resistant flowers on a 3.5 foot spike. Std, Med, Feb, 4N 16k, 44k

Cym. Polly Stark 'Charm' is the best of the cross that we have seen, and has a delightful clear shell pink color. It does not bloom as early as the rest of the cross, but usually is open before Christmas. It can have up to 15 3" flowers on a 3 foot upright spike. We are using this for early pink and fragrant cymbidium breeding. Nov, Sm, Dec, 4N, E2 39k

Cym. Pontac 'Trinity' is a dark red round brownish red flower from the Eric Young Orchid Foundation. It can have up to 15 4.5" round flowers on a 3 foot upright spike. We are using this with our other good reds to improve the quality of red cymbidium breeding. Std, Med, Mar, 4N 63k
