Cymbidium parents we use with names from A - F

This page presents a summary of our cymbidium and other outdoor growing breeding plants with names starting from A through F. These are used for breeding and display only and are generally not for sale. Photographs of many of the plants are included with three image sizes, a thumbnail about 80 x 60 pixels in size which is automatically displayed with the plant description (if image display is enabled), and links to a midsized image about 320 x 240 pixels in size and a 640 x 480 full sized image. Click on the thumbnail to see the full sized image or click on the plant name to see the midsized image if a midsized image is linked. All images are jpeg compressed and the image size in kbytes is included for each image so you can estimate the time required to download an image.

We try to include the important characteristics of each plant and what we expect it to produce as a parent. Plant size is indicated by Lar, Med, or Sm for large, medium or small, type of plant is indicated by Std, Nov or Min for standard, novelty or miniature cymbidium, bloom season is the primary month of bloom in coastal southern California and ploidy is shown as 2N, 3N, 4N or 6N, or with ? if uncertain. Novelty plants have a miniature parent in the background, and the miniature parent and generation is indicated by P, E, D, C, S, M, or O for pumilum (floribundum), ensifolium, devonianum, canaliculatum, sinense (hoosai), madidum or other. The number after the letter indicates first, second, etc. generation for the miniature species in the background.

Cym. (Accent x Pinata) 'Hot Lips' is a light pink with 12 open formed 3 inch flowers on an arching to pendant spike with a bright banded burgundy lip, and is covered with burgundy spots on the sepals and petals. We are using this plant with other spotted or pendant parents to develop more spotted pendant flowers. Nov, Sm, Mar, 2N, D2 78k

Cym. (Dainty x Candy Floss) '#3' is a bright, clear pink 4.5 inch flower with good spacing and 12 to 14 flowers on a long, arching spike. We expect this plant will produce good, clear well spaced pink flowers when hybridized with other good pink parents. Std, Lar, Mar-Apr, 4N 64k

Cym. Ann Miller 'Rejoyce' AM/AOS S/CSA is a dark red full 3 inch flower with a red banded lip on medium length upright spikes. Hybrids from Ann Miller typically produce 15 to 20 dark red novelty flowers on medium length spikes, somewhat crowded and seems to breed as a pod parent only, best with standards. Nov, Med, Feb-Mar, 2N, P2

Cym. Applejack 'Solana Beach' is a reddish yellow full formed 4 inch flower which normally blooms at Christmas for us outdoors with two medium length spikes with up to 18 flowers each on a bulb. It produces free blooming hybrids, many with multiple spikes in the yellow to red range, depending on the other parent. Std, Med, Dec, 4N 18k, 56k

Cym. Baltic Honey 'Solana Beach' is a compact growing dark green 4 inch flower which normally blooms around the first of January outdoors with 12 flowers on a medium length spike. The flower is resistant to sunstaining and is a clear, clean, intense green with a faint hint of blue when bloomed under 55% shade cloth. Many of the offspring are bright clear greens with no sunstaining at all when grown outdoors. Std, Med, Jan, 4N 18k, 57k

Cym. Baltic Snow is a clear sparkling white 4 inch round flower which blooms at Christmas for us outdoors with 12 flowers on a medium spike. The flower does not sunstain at all. The hybrids are usually clean white flowers which are resistant to sunstaining. Std, Med, Dec, 4N 16k, 54k

Cym. Baltic Snow 'Molly' is a clear sparkling white 4 inch round flower which blooms at Christmas for us outdoors with 12 flowers on a medium spike. The flower does not sunstain at all. The hybrids are usually clean white flowers which are resistant to sunstaining. Std, Med, Dec, 4N

Cym. Bangles 'Hot Shot' is an unusual open formed polychrome (pastel pink and green) 4 inch flower on medium upright spikes, well peppered with fine burgundy spots on the sepals and petals. It typically flowers in February or March when grown outdoors. We are using this for spotted breeding. Std, Med, Feb, 2N 34k

Cym. Black Forest 'Plum Wine' is a second generation aloifolium clear even wine red 2 inch flower with an almost black pinched lip blooming in March on medium upright spikes. It has produced some nice red novelty flowered hybrids with dark lips. Andy Easton has used it for several hybrids. Nov, Sm, Mar, 2N, o2 59k

Cym. Black Silk 'Brown Velvet' is a clear even brown 3 inch flower with an almost black band on a white lip blooming in March on medium spikes. It has produced nice red to brown novelty flowered hybrids with an occasional nearly black flower. Nov, Sm, Mar, 2N, P2 22k, 59k

Cym. Bo Jangles 'Dancin' Man' HCC/AOS, B/CSA is a reddish yellow full formed 4.5 inch flat flower which normally blooms at Christmas for us outdoors with two medium length spikes with up to 18 flowers each on a bulb. Cym. Bo Jangles 'Golden Slippers' is a medium yellow full formed 4.5 inch flat flower which normally blooms at Christmas for us outdoors with two medium length spikes with up to 18 flowers each on a bulb. We are using this plant to create more red to yellow early blooming plants. Std, Med, Dec, 4N

Cym. Bulbarrow 'Will Scarlet' is a light brown 2.5 inch flower on medium pendant spikes blooming in February outdoors. This is probably a triploid which produces a moderate number of seedlings as a pod parent. We have seen pendant red to yellow offspring from this plant to date. Nov, Sm, Feb, 3N D1 18k, 57k

Cym. Camouflage Candy 'Hot Lips' is a medium pink 4.5 inch flower with a big bold lip on medium upright spikes blooming in March for us outdoors. It is free blooming and usually produces multiple spikes. Std, Med, Mar, 4N

Cym. Candy Floss 'Hyperdrive' is a bright pink 4 inch flower on tall upright spikes blooming in March for us outdoors. Others have used this plant to produce good cut flower crosses. Std, Med, Mar, 2N

Cym. Cariga 'Golden' 4N HCC/AOS is an intense golden yellow 4 inch flower blooming on short spikes in April for us outdoors. Most of the offspring are bright yellows with heavy substance. Std, Med, Apr, 4N 18k, 48k

Cym. Carilara 'Old Gold' is an intense golden yellow 4 inch flower blooming on short spikes in April for us outdoors. Most of the offspring are bright yellows with heavy substance. Std, Med, Apr, 4N 19k, 58k

Cym. Carilara 'Gold Dust' is another intense golden yellow 4 inch flower blooming on medium spikes in late March and April for us outdoors. Most of the offspring are bright yellows with heavy substance. Std, Med, Apr, 4N 49k

Cym. Caripepper 'Sunset' is an intense golden yellow 3.5 inch full round flower with a bright orange-red overlay blooming on short spikes in April for us outdoors. We think this should produce bright yellow to fiery orange or red offspring when combined with red or yellow parents. Std, Sm, Apr, 4N 71k

Cym. Clarisse Austin 'Embers' HCC/AOS B/CSA is a dark red 4 inch round flower with up to 14 flowers on a medium spike. It has produced some very bright red to reddish brown flowers in the last 2 years. It is an apparent tetraploid from a triploid cross and breeds very well with large quantities of seed as both as a pod and pollen parent. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 22k, 64k

Cym. Claude Pepper 'Buckland's Beach' AM/AOS is a dark red 4 inch round flower with up to 14 flowers on a medium spike. It has produced some very bright red to reddish brown flowers in the last 2 years. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 21k, 66k

Cym. Claude Pepper 'Dragon's Blood' is a dark red 4 inch round flower with up to 14 flowers on a medium spike. It has produced some very bright red to reddish brown flowers in the last 2 years. It is a very round flower. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 19k, 56k

Cym. Claude Pepper 'Pyes Pa' AM/AOS is a free flowering dark red 3.5 inch round flower with up to 12 flowers on a medium spike and a small compact plant. It has produced a number of awarded red to brown flowers, many on compact plants in the past few years. STD, Sm, Mar, 4N

Cym. Claude Pepper 'Tangerine Glow' is a reddish orange 4 inch flower with up to 16 flowers on a medium spike. It has produced some bright reddish brown flowers in the last 2 years. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 19k, 52k

Cym. Claudona 'Rajah' 4N HCC/AOS is a yellowish brown 5 inch flower with the largest red banded lip that we have seen. The offspring have been mostly nice brown round flowers with big, bold lips with some awards. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 23k, 68k

Cym. Cleo's Melody 'Freakout' AD/CSA is a most unusual 3.5 inch ivory white sepal peloric flower with the pattern and shape of half a lip reproduced on the lower half of the lateral sepals. About half of the offspring exhibit the same peloric markings in the lateral sepals for at least two generations so the mutation appears to be a genetically dominant trait. STD, Sm, Mar, 4N 19k, 57k

Cym. Coraki 'Margaret' 4N B/CSA is a very bright yellow 3.5 inch flower on a short spike with a broad dark red band on the lip. This has produced many bright yellow offspring with a number of awards. It can bloom with several sequential spikes during the season. STD, Sm, Feb-Apr, 4N 18k, 54k

Cym. Cotton Candy 'Wizard' is a light pink petal peloric 3.5 inch flower with up to 15 flowers on a medium arching spike. This is one of the few petal pelorics that has produced a good amount of seed and viable plants as both a pod and pollen parent. We haven't seen anything bloom from this yet, so we don't know whether it will breed more peloric flowers or not. STD, Sm, Feb-Apr, 4N 54k

Cym. Dag 'Little Jewel' B/CSA is a clear dark green 2.5 inch flower with an orange banded lip on a compact plant. The offspring tend to be dark green with banded lips. Nov, Sm, Feb, 2N, P1 17k, 54k

Cym. Dear Karen 'Lucifer' B/CSA is a free blooming reddish lavender 3 inch full flower with a dark reddish burgundy banded lip with 20 flowers on a medium length spike. The offspring are usually good round flowers ranging from dark red to burgundy. A number of the offspring have received awards. Since the offspring with tetraploids are very fertile, we believe this is a tetraploid. Nov, Sm, Feb, 2N, P2 20k, 59k

Cym. Devon Lord 'Viceroy' AM/AOS B/CSA is a very round 3 inch pink flower on a long arching to pendant spike. The color seems to be recessive in the offspring with the other parent dominating. Nov, Sm, Feb, 2N, D2 21k, 61k

Cym. Doris Aurea 'Cardinal' 4N is a free blooming dark red 4 inch open formed flower which has been used for a good deal of red breeding. We are using this with other good reds to produce dark colored pot plants. Std, Med, Mar, 4N

Cym. Dorothy Rowe 'Showoff' is a nice bright, full clear dark pink 5 inch flower with a nice banded lip which opens exceptionally flat with good spacing and 12 flowers on an upright spike. We expect this plant will produce good, clear well spaced pink flowers when hybridized with other good pink parents. Std, Med, Mar, 4N 65k

Cym. Double Take 'Charm' AD/CSA is a most unusual 3.5 inch pink sepal peloric flower with the pattern and shape of half a lip reproduced on the lower half of the lateral sepals from the Cleo's Melody parent. We expect about half of the offspring to exhibit the same peloric markings in the lateral sepals. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 20k, 60k

Cym. Enchanted Beach 'Fiesta' is a very large 6 - 7 inch white open formed flower, with the sepals and petals well covered with burgundy spots. It can have up to 15 flowers well spaced on a 5 foot spike. Stunning due to its sheer size and the spotting. We expect some of the offspring to be nicely spotted. STD, Lar, Mar, 4N 21k, 66k

Cym. Enchanted Profile 'Princess' B/CSA is a 5 inch light pink flower with a darker pink midrib in the segments and well spaced on long spikes. This has produced some striped flowers in the offspring. STD, Lar, Mar, 4N 20k, 61k

Cym. Enchanted Profile 'Royale Gem' is a 4 inch clean white flower with a dark pink line in the midrib of the sepals and petals. Up to 15 flowers are well arranged on medium spikes. This has produced some striped flowers in the offspring. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 15k, 40k

Cym. Enchanted Profile 'Stars and Stripes' is a 4 inch clean white flower with dark pink lines in the sepals and petals. Up to 15 flowers are nicely arranged on medium spikes. This has produced some striped flowers in the offspring. STD, Med, Mar, 4N 21k, 64k

Cym. Floriflame 'Big Mama' is a 3 inch medium reddish pink flower that blooms in September, and has almost the largest flower of the cross. The Peter Pan heritage brings fragrance and warmth tolerance into the hybrid. We expect the offspring of the Floriflames to be mostly fragrant, early and warmth tolerant. Cym. Floriflame 'Hot Lips' is similar to the other Floriflames, but has a better lip color which we hope will come through in the offspring. Nov, Med, Oct, 4N, E2

Cym. Floriflame 'Passion' HCC/AOS B/CSA has the largest and best formed flower of the cross. The plant is also the largest of the cross and will produce two spikes on the bulb, each with 20 or more 3.5 inch vibrant reddish pink flowers. It has been difficult to get seed from this clone, but a couple of crosses are coming along. We look to improve the fragrance, size and form in the early reds with this clone. Cym. Floriflame 'Rosie' is similar to the other Floriflames in form and blooming characteristics, but has a bright rosy color which we hope will come through in the offspring. Nov, Med, Oct, 4N, E2

Cym. Floriflame 'Rosy Charm' is similar to the other Floriflames in form and blooming characteristics, but has a bright rosy color. Nov, Med, Oct, 4N, E2

Cym. Floriflame 'Round Rascal' is similar to the other Floriflames, but has a rounder form which we hope will come through in the offspring. Nov, Med, Oct, 4N, E2

Cym. Floriflame 'Strawberry Pink' is similar to the other Floriflames, but with a lighter clear color. Nov, Med, Oct, 4N, E2

Cym. Fred Stewart 'Olympus' is a famous old semi early white parent which resists sunstaining and is in the background of a lot of early cut flower breeding. We like it for the clear white color it can impart under high light conditions. Std, Med, Feb, 4N

Cym. Frosted Pearl 'Sea Diver' is a nice early midseason clear white flower with little tendency for sunstain. With a little luck, we will flower the first of its seedlings this season. Hopefully, it will give nonstaining whites under outdoor conditions. Std, Med, Feb, 4N

Cym. Fuss 'Fiesta' is a medium purple-red novelty with a nice spike on a small plant. The Fuss cultivars produce mostly purple-red offspring. Nov, Sm, Mar, 2N, P2

Cym. Floriflame 'Passion' HCC/AOS B/CSA has the largest and best formed flower of the cross. The plant is also the largest of the cross and will produce two spikes on the bulb, each with 20 or more 3.5 inch vibrant reddish pink flowers. It has been difficult to get seed from this clone, but a couple of crosses are coming along. We look to improve the fragrance, size and form in the early reds with this clone.
