This is a review of the 1999 Palomar Orchid Society show held April 9 - 11 at the San Marcos Community Center, San Marcos, CA. The Palomar show is a small local show with 4 to 6 small displays and about 15 or more 8 foot tables filled with individual entries. There were 5 separate displays in this year's show. A total of 4 CSA and 2 AOS awards were granted at the show. We have included pictures and descriptions of many of the plants and displays awarded during the show and other interesting flowers or plants. We entered a single tabletop display of nothing but cymbidiums with an emphasis on unusual and high color, and several first flowering seedlings. This is a view of our display. 79 kb.
The San Diego County Branch of the Cymbidium Society of America (CSA) put in the only floor display in the show as shown here. All of the plants in the display were grown outdoors in the Southern California area. 74 kb.
Jackie and Little John Bassett have put in a tabletop display in the Palomar show for a number of years. This is their 1999 entry. 74 kb.
Charles 'Butch' Weckerle-Thrun and The Rowland Collection entered a double tabletop display with several genera and a nice group of Paph. malipoense, one of which was close to FCC quality. They received the AOS show trophy and two CSA awards. 56 kb.
This hybrid of Cym. Pfeiffer Falls (Jean Brummitt x Tethys) with about 30 flowers on a cascading spike in the Rowland Collection display was very nice and had a spectacular lip. Others in this cross have been beautifully covered with burgundy spots. 60 kb.
Another interesting line of miniature cymbidium breeding by The Rowland Collection is shown with this plant of Cym. (pumilum x chloranthum). These may be much more warmth tolerant than pumilum itself and could form the basis for a different line of miniature cymbidium breeding. 58 kb.
Another interesting line of miniature cymbidium breeding by The Rowland Collection is shown with this plant of Cym. (Bulbarrow x canaliculatum). The influence of both devonianum (from Bulbarrow) and canaliculatum are present in this flower. 69 kb.
The Rowland Collection is also known for paphs, and this plant of Paph. malipoense 'Silmaril' is the finest I have seen. This plant has a previous AM/AOS and S/CSA, and I would have considered it for an FCC. The intensity and depth of color is superb. 54 kb.
Marilyn Levy had included this plant of Paph. Charlie O'Neill 'Lovely Lisa' (godfroyae x micranthum) in The Rowland Collection display where it received a B/CSA. 69 kb.
Ralph Smith of Leucadia Orchids showed this plant of Phal. Ho's Amaglade 'South Coast' (Be Glad x amabilis) which received a HCC/AOS at the show. I thought this was exceptionally nice with flowers about 2.5 inches across on a compact plant. 32 kb.
This is a closeup view of Phal. Ho's Amaglade 'South Coast' which better shows the clear white color and sparkling texture of the flower 31 kb.
Oceanside Orchids specializes in Phalaenopsis, and they had a number of nice plants in their display, including this Phal. Taida Lawrence (Brother Lawrence x Goldberry). 64 kb.
Another Phal. Taida Lawrence shown by Oceanside Orchids. 60 kb.
Oceanside Orchids also showed this Dtps. Buena 'Lemonbrook'. 44 kb.
Fred Clark is one of the finer growers in the North San Diego county area. Shown here is his very well bloomed plant of Phal. stuartiana 'Larkin Valley'. 79 kb.
Fred Clark also showed this plant of Hawkinsara Hazel Nut 'Olympic Tourch' which received a HCC/AOS. This plant had a wonderful intense reddish lavender color with a great sparkling diamond dust texture. 46 kb.
Fred Clark does a good job with the paphiopedilums, and his plant of Paph. rothschildianum 'Martha' was chosen the best paph and best species of the show. 73 kb.
Fred Clark also showed this Paph. St. Swithin 'Martha' which received a B/CSA at the show. 76 kb.
Fred Clark seems to have the knack for growing and blooming the rothschildianum hybrids. Here is Paph. Lady Isabel 'Martha' which received a B/CSA at the show. 50 kb.
Fred Clark also showed this fine Paph. Lynleigh Koopowitz 'Martha'. 61 kb.
Yamada's Orchid Nursery showed a number of epidendrum hybrids including this Epi. Lillian Yamamoto. This is a compact plant with a huge head of brilliant orange red flowers. They have made a great deal of progress in improving the quality of the epidendrums. 51 kb.
Another of the wonderful epidendrums shown by Yamada was this Epi. Helen Yamada, another brilliant orange red on a compact plant. 52 kb.
I like the bright colors of the masdevallias, and this beautifully spotted Masd. Sunset Jaguar 'Purple Sunset' was especially attractive. This plant had previously received an HCC/AOS. 53 kb.
We didn't have too many cymbidiums in this show; we did have some intense colors. This plant of Cym. Ruby Girl 'Chocolate' was a dark chocolate brown with 4 spikes and about 75 flowers in a 6 inch pot. 57 kb.
Another of our dark cymbidiums was this Cym. Happy Hooker 'Passion'. The cross of Happy Hooker has produced some very dark purple red flowers. 60 kb.
Another very dark flower in our display was this plant of Cym. Inky Dink (Peppermint x Ruby Eyes). These have all had wine red flowers on small compact plants. 91 kb.
The brightest color in our display was probably this plant of Cym. Persian Bronze 'Sunset'. This is one of the clearest and brightest oranges we have. I think this is an exceptional color for a cymbidium, and the color holds well outdoors for more than a month. 63 kb.
