This is a photographic review of the some of the new and more interesting things that we saw at the Orange County CSA Show at the Crate and Barrel wing at South Coast Plaza on February 3 - 6 2001. With more than 60 vendors and at least 70 displays, this is one of the largest shows in the US. Displays and sales booths covered the entire 3 floors of the mall. Congratulations to Tony Glinskas, Roberta Fox and the rest of the show committee for a fabulous job. Click on the thumbnail images to bring up a larger image (size shown in kilobytes).
Crystal Court sponsors a massive display in the rotunda of the mall for the OCCSA show. This year, the display featured a seascape scene and was about 18 feet tall. Fish floated underneath lilly pads around a central reef with shells, starfish, corals and other sea creatures while a white bird waded in the water. 83 kb.

The show at Crystal Court is put on by the Orange County Branch of the CSA. This display was the one put in by the San Diego County CSA branch, and it featured mostly Cymbidiums and Paphs. 82 kb.
Andy Phillips (Andy's Orchids) consistently puts together a fine display of nothing but species. This is his display in the 2001 show, and was spectacular as usual, towering 12 feet in the air. 55 kb.
This is another view of Andy's dislay in the 2001 show. 53 kb.
Andy included this plant of Mediacalcar verstesii in his display. 63 kb.
Another of Andy's plants was this charming miniature plant of Aerangis hyaloides which was only a few inches across. 72 kb.
Most Paph. wardii plants have spotted petals, but this group of Paph wardii plants in Andy's display come from a group of seedlings which has produced many with solid colored petals. 70 kb.
Santa Barbara Orchid Estate had an attractive table top display of all novelty cymbidiums with pendant spikes. 88kb.
We don't see too many vandas in Southern California, and it is refreshing when we see one like this huge Vanda Julia Sorenson. This flower was more than 5 inches across with a great glistening very dark reddish purple color. This plant was in the J & M Orchids display. 64 kb.
The Rowland Collection specializes in miniature and novelty cymbidiums as well as paphs. This shows one side of their display and some of the Paphs and cymbidiums. They received the CSA Paph. gold medal for the best display of paphiopedilums. 81 kb.

We have put in a display of cymbidiums in the Orange County Show for the last 19 years. This shows part of our 2001 display which won the CSA Gold Medal for the best display of Cymbidiums in the show, with a number of first bloom seedlings and red and orange flowers. 84 kb.
Another view of our display showing the wide range of colors we are working with. 68 kb.
One of the first bloom seedlings in our display was this Cym. Devon Ruby 'Valentine'. This cross of Devon Lord 'Viceroy' x Ruby Eyes 'Red Baron' 4N has produced mostly dark red flowers on compact plants with pendant spikes. This is the best of the cross that we have seen with exceptionally large very flat flowers and very full form, and received a Silver award from the CSA and a HCC from the AOS. 77 kb.
This is a view of the entire pendant spike of Cym. Devon Ruby 'Valentine' showing the good flower spacing on the spike. It received the trophy for the best miniature cymbidium and the best pendant cymbidium. 57 kb.
One of the pure color crosses we have made is this Cym. Pure Gold 'Charm'. All of these have been either yellow or green. 49 kb.
One of the big red cymbidiums in our display was this Cym. Firestorm 'Wildfire'. Like many of the Firestorm cross, this is a 5 inch flower. It also exhibits a problem common to almost all red cymbidium crosses, the extra growth on the column. 45 kb.
Christmas Clarion 'Apricot Glow' is a nice apricot colored cymbidium we had in our display. This is a 4 inch flower with more than 20 flowers on a stem. Normally, these bloom too early to be in good condition for this show, but this year the weather cooperated and the flowers were in prime condition. 65 kb.
Cym. Mouse Eyes (Mighty Mouse x Ruby Eyes) has been a consistently good dark red cross for us as shown here. 64 kb.
No cymbidium display of ours would be complete without a spotted cymbidium. This plant of Cym. Rocky Creek 'Dots' was one of several. 69 kb.
Orchids of Los Osos had a nice table top display of Paphs as usual. This Paph. Gloria Naugle 'Sunstar' was one of the best, and received a B/CSA. 59 kb.
Sunset Orchids had their normal display of impressive odont intergeneric hybrids, Lycaste hybrids and Miltonias as shown here. 79 kb.

One of the spectacularly bloomed Lycaste plants in the Sunset Orchids display was this Lycaste Auburn 'Santa Barbara'. 75 kb.
Another spectacular Lycaste plant in the Sunset Orchids display was this incredibly deep red Lycaste Jackpot 'Sunset Royalty'. 56 kb.
This interesting Lycaste species is L. longipetala 'Green Giant' as shown in the Sunset Orchids display. 76 kb.
One of the many nice Miltonia plants in the Sunset Orchids display was this clear pink Miltoniopsis Second Love 'Tokimaki'. This plant has very nice petals without much of the reflexing of the petals which is so commonly seen in Miltoniopsis flowers. 55 kb.
Fordyce orchids entered this display of mostly nice cattleya plants. 67 kb.
This Phal. was included in the Orquidea Wholesaler display, but there was no identification as to cross or name. 59 kb.
One of the most spectacular cattleya type plants in the show was this peloric (C. Kevin Green x S. coccinea). Frank Fordyce says this plant is very unstable in bloom, and seldom do the flowers look this uniform. 65 kb.
The Newport Harbor orchid society assembled this large display which won the AOS Show Trophy. 52 kb.
A number of orchid societies in the Southern California had displays in the show. This was the South Bay Orchid Society display. 89 kb.
